Body Confidence
Mrs Groves has been a teacher for the older Primary children for the last 9 years and loves teaching science!
When I get a new cohort of children I always know their science knowledge of the body is limited to learning at a much younger age. We always start with two large pieces of paper while children draw a child outline on. Their first task in the classroom is to draw on the sizes, shapes and positions of the main organs. Once done, we all go outside for them to mark their work using the playground science signs. This causes quite a lot of consternation but it is a great way for me to assess prior knowledge, correct misunderstandings and move learning forward.
These activities are followed up with quizzes such as identifying bone groups that protect key organs, muscles used for particular movements, whole groups of body parts used in a specific action such as picking up a ball or what am I doing if I use the following sequence of bones, muscles and organs.
This always promotes A LOT of discussion!
This always promotes A LOT of discussion!
Taking the learning for this outside and using our playground signs keeps children interested and focused plus there is the added benefit of children continuing learning after the lesson has ended. When I'm on playground duty I often see children peering at the images and talking about what is inside their bodies!
